The Brown Bomber at Leo's Diner

Erik Totten · January 9, 2009

I live in Benson so many of FSM’s meetings are often held at the neighborhood restaurants, coffee shops and bars in the area. Over the time I’ve been in Benson – a little over a year and a half – Leo’s Diner has become one of my favorite places to have breakfast or lunch while chatting up a prospective client, writer, photographer, etc. It’s just my type of place, quaint and unpretentious, while still serving up some great food. They’re known for their hamburgers (they used to be known for their pan crepes as well) but everything is pretty darn good.

During a trip to Leo’s a month or so ago, I discovered what could possibly be the best thing I’ve ever had there - the brown bomber. It’s not a regular menu item, but it does come up occasionally on the specials board. Still, it can be ordered anytime if you know the secret code. I ordered it on a day I couldn’t figure out what to order and it was a special. I thought it sounded interesting but I certainly wasn’t prepared for liking (okay, loving) it as much as I do. I swear, some days, I think about it hourly.

The brown bomber is hash browns mixed with fresh ground beef, bacon (mmmm, bacon), mushrooms and onions, topped with tomatoes and swimming in a sea of delicious brown gravy with a sprinkling of cheese on top. Of course depending on individual tastes, things can be taken out but it’s perfect the way it is. Seriously and unexpectedly perfect.

I would agree that Leo's is unpretentious. I must say that I seldom pass up an opportunity not to eat there, including today. Having eaten there a half dozen times in recent years I simply don't see what the attraction of the place is. It certainly isn't the speed of service or the ease of paying one's bill. Different strokes....
